Glenn's Drums

These are the drums I have made. They are all (to date) stave constructed drums in the style of traditional African hand drums (Ashiko's and Djembe's).

If you want to know about how to construct these drums, go here.

Initially I have made the drums for my own use, however I have been asked whether any are for sale, and so I am currently (April '05) constructing two more Ashiko style drums (similar to the Sheaok Ashiko below) out of Sheoak and Bull-Banksia – with the intention of selling these to further my hobby of making more drums (and other instruments).

Completed Drums.

This is my first Ashiko style drum. It is made of clear pine and has a 315mm (13”) drumhead and stands about 600mm tall.

Lessons learned from this drum include using a four ring system on Ashiko's to stop the knots on the bottom ring pulling tracks into the soft timber as the seat into the side of the drum, and using more verticals (min 24) to reduce the size of the Mali weave triangles and make it easier to tension the skin.

This drum has a low bass, but has a tendency to ring a little. This may be improved by adding a fourth ring and more verticals (Update: this has been done and I have been able to tighten the skin a lot).

This was my second drum – after a fashion. It was a practice drum shell constructed of recycled pine pallets that I got from a motor-cycle dealer.

My intention was to practice new construction ideas on this drum and not be too worried if I made a mess of it.

This neat little drum turned out so good, that I decided to put a skin on it anyway.

It has a 300mm (12”) drumhead and stands about 470mm tall.

My third drum is a Djembe styled drum. It is more or less two stave constructed shells, one atop the other.

The drumhead is 300mm (12”) and it stands about 500mm tall.

The timber is Silky Oak.

While the bowl section isn't a full as a traditional Djembe, this drum still has the characteristic booming bass of the Djembe.

This Ashiko was made for a colleague (mate's rates :-).

The drum is made of New Zealand Kauri Pine, which gives it it's delightful honey colour.

The drumhead is 300mm (12”) and it stands around 540mm tall.

This Askiko is made of West Australian Sheoak.

The drumhead is 300mm (12”) and it stands around 620 mm tall.

This little Djembe was constructed of recycled Jarrah skirting boards that I collected from a council kerbside rubbish collection (bring-out-your-dead day) and some left over skin and iron for the rings. All up it cost me a a few bucks for to get the rings welded, and a couple of bucks worth of rope.

The drumhead is surprisingly around 270mm and it stands around 370mm tall.

Naturally it doesn't sound as good as it's bigger brothers, but it travels well and is great for practice.

300mm (12”) Sheoak Ashiko.

This drum stands aprox 580mm tall and has a thickish skin.

It was purchased by a neighbor for his wife's 30th birthday.

300mm (12”) Bull Banksia Ashiko.

Just waiting for some rope to arrive so I can skin this one.
