Probe Assemblies for NDT
NTS Ultrasonics can supply various types of probe holder and transducer assemblies for system integrators to apply to their own developments. We can
probes, and from time to time we have designed and built novel probes such as ball probes, and air ultrasound based X-Y transducer position locators.
Ultrasonic Wheel Probes
Currently we offer two wheel probes:
RL70. A small 70 mm diameter ultrasonic wheel probe with a long internal water path for it's size.
PL180. A 180 mm diameter wheel intended for heavy duty use with multiple transducers. It is suitable for rail flaw detection and steel mill applications.
RL70:
 70 mm diameter (approx.);
 70 mm internal water path (allows inspection to approximately 275 mm in steel);
 Suitable for general ultrasonic inspection applications;
 Ultrasonic thickness testing,
 Ultrasonic corrosion mapping,
 Ultrasonic flaw detection,
 Accepts single 16 mm immersion style transducer;
 Rubber tyre with an acoustic impedance close to that of water;
 Stainless steel assembly
Accessories:
 Hand trolley with or without an encoder for manual inspection;
 Caliper for attaching to mechnical systems

PL180:
 180 mm diameter(approx.) when filled;
 100 mm internal water path or greater - depending on transducer configuration
 Can accept multiple transducers, e.g. 0 degree. 37 degree, and 70 degree as used in rail flaw detection;
 Can be used for longitudinal and shear waves in test pieces,
 Wide enough to accept paintbrush style transducers,
 Transducers are electrically isolated from metal parts of the wheel;
 Users can easily design and instal their own transducer holding blocks;
 Uses a tough polyurethane tyre
Accessories:
 Caliper for holding the wheel;
 Pump system for filling wheels with fluid

Custom design ultrasonic wheel probes
We can offer a design service to clients requiring their own ultrasonic wheel probe. We can design multi-transducer wheel probes that might be used in
ultrasonic rail flaw detection, for example, and provide specifications for the tyre material and neutral temperature coefficient filling fluids. We can also
design wheel probes with fixed angle transducers and variable angle wheel probes.
Bubblers and Jet Probes (Squirters)
Bubblers and jet probes are probe assemblies that use water to couple the ultrasonic pulses into the work piece. Bubblers are located close to a surface,
whereas jet probes are typically located up to 50 mm away from a surface and couple through a jet of water that accomodates work piece movement or
changes in shape. Bubblers and jet probes designs tend to be application specific and are best custom designed to a clients requirements.
We can build simple bubblers that fit on the end of a transducer, or bubblers in spring loaded mechanical assemblies for following uneven surfaces. We
can also provide bubblers with curved shoes for the ultrasonic inspection of round bar stock.
We can build squirters with laminar flow water jets up to 10 mm diameter. Laminar flow is important to prevent degradation of the ultrasonic performance.

Novel probes
The following is an example of a specialized probe developed for a specific application.

These images show a ball probe that allows freehand scanning of a surface. The spherical coupler allows dry coupling on some materials, however, the probe works best with a supply of water as an internal and external couplant.
