Project Overkill is Daniel Ross

All my life I have been drawn towards music and sound. I was never pushed or influenced to pursue it, but music is a language, for one reason or another that has always made sense to me.

As a child I would obsess over certain musical parts from my parents tapes and records, repeating them constantly and driving everybody crazy. I would load games on the Commodore 64 just to listen to the music.

Starting high School in 1991, I was rejected from the music class try-outs, due to what "they" said was an under-developed understanding of musical theory.

I began writing my own music in my bedroom when I was 14, and soon came to the realisation that the boundaries of Music Theory, although helpful, can sometimes be a limiting factor in the creative process.

I chose to disregard the "rules" and just make what felt right, what sounded right and what I would want to listen to, with major influences such as Trent Reznor (NIN) and Liam Howlett (Prodigy) paving the way. Project Overkill (and other incarnations) was born from this point.

Nobody can teach you the valuable lessons and skills that you gain over time from your own experiences. The journey, although longer and testing at times is worth every second.

Out of curiousity I finally read "Music Theory 101" in 2007 and was astonished that I already knew vast amounts of it. Sure, there was actually "official names" for certain techniques, tempos, styles, scales and chords, but I knew them in my own way, from doing it my own way.

This is a straight forward and minimalistic site, a showcase of my musical Journey since the mid 1990's. Free from useless eyecandy and unessessary bloatware, its all about the music. It will continue to be updated as I write and release new songs. If you feel like it, you can also check out the charts at Reverbnation, or connect with Project Overkill on the usual social media sites listed here.
